Chapter One

The Unmarked Turn

The road appeared just beyond the final bend, narrow and rain-dark, disappearing between pines that seemed older than the mountain itself. Ayaan slowed the car. The map showed nothing there, but memory did.

For nearly an hour, the highway had followed the river north, climbing gradually through villages made quiet by the afternoon rain. He had passed shuttered tea stalls, orchards wrapped in silver mist and children waving from beneath umbrellas much too large for them.

Nothing had asked him to stop. Not until now.

He pulled onto the gravel shoulder and turned off the engine. Without its low hum, the valley felt impossibly still. Rain tapped against the windscreen. Somewhere below, hidden by trees, water moved over stone.

Ayaan studied the opening between the pines. Two weathered posts stood on either side of the road, but there was no gate and no sign. A thin trail of tyre marks disappeared into the shadows.

He had promised himself never to return. Yet some promises are made only because we know, somewhere inside us, that they cannot be kept.

On the passenger seat lay the photograph he had found three days earlier. Its corners were soft with age. A house beneath tall trees. A woman standing on the veranda. And, written on the back in a hand he recognised immediately, four words:

Beyond the pines, wait.

He picked up the photograph, held it beside the view through the windscreen and felt the years between them quietly collapse.

The first kilometre was easier than he expected. The road curved gently through the forest, its broken surface softened by fallen needles. With every turn, the highway behind him became less real.

Then he saw the roof.

It appeared for only a moment between the trees—a brief line of rusted metal below the mist—before the road dipped and hid it again. Ayaan tightened his hands around the steering wheel.

He was no longer wondering whether this was the place.

He was wondering who might still be waiting.
